Barcelona's head coach, Xavi Hernandez, has emphasized the need for defensive improvement as the team strives to rectify a shaky start to the 2023-2024 season. Currently occupying the fourth position in La Liga, Barcelona faces a seven-point deficit behind leaders Real Madrid and Girona.
While Barcelona showcased an exceptional defensive performance last season, conceding only 20 goals in 38 league matches, the team has struggled defensively in the current campaign, conceding 21 goals in 18 games.
"I'm more worried about the defensive area (than the attack)," Xavi stated in a news conference, expressing his concern about Barcelona's defensive lapses compared to their formidable defensive displays in the previous season.
Xavi acknowledged that the team is lacking efficiency in the attacking department but highlighted the challenge of conceding goals despite scoring two or three in certain matches, citing examples like the 4-2 home defeat to Girona and 2-2 draws against Mallorca and Granada.
In hopes of bolstering the team, Xavi mentioned the potential inclusion of new signing Vitor Roque in the squad for the upcoming match against Las Palmas. The 18-year-old Brazilian striker arrived during the winter transfer window from Athletic Paranaense.
"He will be in the squad list; we hope he's available. It's a question of hours," said Xavi, expressing optimism about Roque's integration into the team.
However, Xavi also stressed the need to approach Roque's inclusion carefully, considering the adaptation process and ensuring the player's readiness.
Las Palmas coach Francisco Garcia Pimienta, who previously coached Barcelona's reserve side, acknowledged the special significance of facing Barcelona and characterized the match as a unique occasion for him.
Barcelona's defensive struggles and the quest for improvement will be under scrutiny as they face Las Palmas, with Xavi aiming to strengthen the team's defensive solidity and climb the La Liga standings in the second half of the season.
